Haus Frau

This week is just about over, and I haven't had much to post because of my day job as a mum/wife.  Since my darling husband/editor, has been putting in overtime in the classroom this week, I've really had to put my house wifing skills to the test.  For the past few days I've had to cook every meal, clean, do hair, bathe the Wolf, do hair, cook some more, then finally find time to make sure I was not wearing my own clothing inside out.
With the weekend approaching we are going to a friend's wedding in the northern part of Illinois, I am hoping since my husband is standing up in the wedding and has to do wedding hoo-ha this means momma will get to hit the local thrift shops. A well earned reward for holding down the household.

Curbside/Free

So after our little play trip in the park, we were walking home through the alley way.  I love walking through the allies of the old homes in our neighborhood, because some of the garages/carriage houses are just as pretty as the homes themselves. Well, today was my lucky day, there was a yard sale that was long over from earlier in the day. The people who had the sale were "cocktailing" in their backyard, if you can read between the lines (that's the term they used).  When they called out and said" all this is free, or you can get it from the curb tomorrow".  I tried to hold back my excitement, but they could tell I was a girl who knew my knick knacks. So with husband and son in tow I picked through the treasures, and walked away a happy girl.  I wanted to take everything they had, but let's be realistic I don't need to own every single piece of junk this town puts out. So here were my choices:

I've wanted one of these suitcases ever since Erin and Stephanie over at Oh So Lovely  and Rachel of Smile and Wave had pictures of their suitcase up on the web.

Who can resist a teapot? Especially a free one.

Year 1

Well, that went fast.  How did Wolfgang get to be one already?  They say time flies when your having fun, which has pretty much summed up this past year with Wolfgang.  Of course, there have been difficult times, but on the spectrum of life it doesn't compare with the joy.  This past year has been such a wonderful adventure of self discovery and coming of age...for all of us.  I can't wait to see what even bigger changes are going to happen this year for our little guy. To celebrate we had a party for Wolfie at my folks house up in the burbs of Chicago.  I am happy I did not go over board with birthday-ness(there will be many more years ahead with theme parties elaborate decor and cakes), and just trying to make it an enjoyable day for  Wolfie.

Wolfie's pal Evan. Evan's mum Sam and I have been pals since I was 2!

My Husband knows his way around the grill and kitchen, no guest went home hungry.

I wanted to do a fun colored white cake, with white frosting. People were surprised with the teal colored cake.

Bringing Wolfgang his first birthday cake brought tears to our eyes.

There was no "cake smashing" here, Wolfgang made sure no cake or frosting went to waste.

One year of being a mum under my belt, we made it through the first year as a new family.  I can't wait to see what future birthday will bring our little family. Happy birthday Wolfgang!

Grannie Blankies

Okay,  so I can't believe I'm actually writing about these afghans. The hodge-podge of colors, textures and shapes was a gift I used to dread receiving from my dad's Aunt Lil when I young.  The weird color combinations that Aunt Lil would put together would lead me to believe that she crocheted it in the dark. Now, twenty some years later, I am trolling the thrift stores to find these discarded gifts of the past.  Some retail stores are even selling some that almost cost $300, yikes! At my most recent thrift trips I decided to take pictures of some of the crocheted gems I bumped into.

What pattern can't you pass by?

When I told my dad I wanted to take pictures of this thing he said "I thought you hated those tacky things?" Well, my words came back to bite me this time.  Do you have a favorite grannie blanket?  If so message me, I'd love to see your crochet heirloom.

3 Ways To Clog With Ugglebo

My wonderful friends at Ugglebo have inspired me once again for a style post.  While spending hours on my feet styling hair, I began to develop chronic foot annoyances of various kinds.  Thus, it has been a continuos challenge finding stylish shoes that are comfortable and look cute as well.

I found that my lovely red Ugglebo clogs are my "go to" cute and comfy shoes.  These clogs are no one trick pony, so here are three ways I wear my Ugglebo's.  (You can view my pair here)

Family Thrift Trip

After making a house call to a client's house, I was ready to go on an adventure.  I asked my husband if we could go to a small town about twenty minuets away from us, exotic Clinton, Illinois, to check out the thrift stores. Next thing I knew we were loaded up in the car and off to find some treausures.  I love going thrifting in other towns seeing what knick knacks they have to offer. Here is what I brought home...

Work From Home

Every week I start out with the best intention of making some sort of little blog post everyday. Then the week starts rolling and time passes by.  For the most part I am thrifter, mum and wife.  But there are times when I need to help papa pay the bills. Working from home is wonderful, but there is definitely an adjustment period going on right now. As my little Wolfman grows up and becomes more vocal about likes and dislikes, the joys of multi-tasking become center stage. So this little post is a small thank you to my friends, family , and clients for being so helpful, loyal and supportive.

Cupcakes & Cocktails

I always feel like September is a pre-game for the Christmas season because all my family and a fair amount of my friends celebrate their birthday this month.  With all this in mind and my constant desire to bake and make decorations ala Martha Stewart, I told my dear friend Sally, who has an amazing Victorian home, that we need to have a cupcake party.  Being the kind gal that Sal is, she let me just run with it. Thus the baking and garland making began...
Simple tissue and notecard garland, love showing off my art skills.
Whoopie pies were something I was craving.  So since it was partially my party I did gladly oblige....myself.

Nutella butter cream on white cake is always a crowd pleaser.
This beautiful peanut butter frosting laid upon some devil's food cake, my husband's favorite.
My baking assistant needed a banana break. He's not used to being in the baking trenches like I am.

Packed up and ready to go!

Bow tie, Jon-jon,and slicked hair, Wolf was ready to party.
Wolf going after lady Sofia
A special gift from Sally.
Wolf helping uncle Casey's bottom half.
Stacks of cupcakes!

The evening was short for me.  Wolfgang needed to go to bed early that night , and I was crashing hard from my sugar high.
